Background of the Study
Political godfatherism refers to the influence of powerful political figures or groups over the selection and promotion of political candidates. In many parts of Nigeria, especially in local government areas like Gombe LGA, political godfatherism plays a significant role in determining which candidates run for office (Hassan & Waziri, 2023). These influential figures or groups often control political party machinery, and their endorsement or support is critical for a candidate’s success in elections. While political godfatherism can provide the necessary resources and networks for candidates, it has also been criticized for promoting nepotism, undermining democratic processes, and stifling the emergence of independent or popular candidates (Adamu & Bello, 2024). This study will explore the effect of political godfatherism on candidate selection in Gombe LGA, examining how these power dynamics shape the electoral landscape and impact the democratic choices available to voters.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political godfatherism in Gombe LGA may limit the diversity of candidates available to voters, as party decisions are often influenced by the interests of a few powerful individuals rather than the broader electorate (Zubair & Usman, 2025). This concentration of political power may affect the quality of representation, reduce accountability, and skew the democratic process. The study will assess how godfatherism influences candidate selection, the impact it has on the political process, and whether it limits the choices available to voters.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of political godfatherism on candidate selection in Gombe LGA, analyzing the 2023 elections. It will not examine other forms of political influence or look at national-level elections. A limitation of the study is the challenge of gathering unbiased data, as political elites may be reluctant to discuss their involvement in godfatherism.
